Mildred “Kay” Katherine Poirot Weirick, 83, of Amarillo, passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2018. A Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 20, 2018, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church Chapel. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Kay was born October 17, 1934, in Dalhart, Texas to Jake and Alma Poirot and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Amarillo. After joining the Medical Mission Sisters of Philadelphia, PA, she spent 10 years working in the Holy Family Hospital in Pakistan.
On April 18, 1970, she married Wayne Weirick in Dallas where they lived 18 years. They then moved to Las Vegas and lived there for 29 years before moving to Amarillo in 2017.
While in Las Vegas and before retiring in 2000, Kay was Director of Housekeeping Services at Bally’s Hotel and Casino. When she retired, she had a total of 42 years in managing hotel housekeeping services.
Kay enjoyed all sorts of traveling. She always looked forward to the Poirot and Zimlich family reunions because it meant being with her brothers and sisters, their spouses, and her extended family. Kay loved taking cruises with Wayne, along with friends and family, as they visited Australia, Bermuda, Ireland, Norway, Panama, and London. And, she never passed up an opportunity to travel to South Bend, Indiana to cheer on the Notre Dame football team and track team.
Kay also volunteered with Hospice in Las Vegas and looked forward to her work because she felt it was necessary to help these patients. Another one of Kay’s life’s enjoyments was her constant companion, her dog. She loved her dog, and firmly believed that life was more enjoyable and more fulfilling because she had a dog.
Survivors include her husband Wayne, her daughter, Cindy Taylor and husband, Dave; her son, Jeff Weirick; three grandchildren, Justin Oppel, Anna Weirick, and Ethan Weirick; two sisters, Mary Poirot McWatters and husband, JR, and Joan Poirot Douthit and husband, David, all of Amarillo; four brothers, Jerry Poirot and wife, Janice, of Amarillo, Carl Poirot and wife, Linda, of Indio, CA, Henry Poirot and wife, Laura, of Longmont, Colo., and Joe Poirot and wife, Cindee, of Roswell, Georgia; and many loving nieces and nephews. And, Sylvia, her dog—her constant companion.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to be to a charity of their choice.
