Robert was born on July 27, 1932 in Abernathy to Robert and Oma Toler. He was raised in Abernathy, where he graduated from Abernathy High School in 1951. He then entered Navy Reserves before enlisting in the United States Army, proudly serving 2 tours in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged after 18 years of service. Robert married Eleanor Bender on January 11, 1969 in Amarillo. Together they moved to New Mexico, where they farmed near Albuquerque for many years before returning to Amarillo in 1982. Robert worked as a salesman for Jimmy Dean Sausage for many years retiring briefly before working at the Carson County feedlot. He enjoyed his career as a salesman, traveling and talking with many people along the way. In his free time, he enjoyed traveling with his wife Eleanor throughout the country.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Toler of Amarillo; daughter, Kathy Hawkins and husband Russell of Amarillo; sister; Wilma Johnson of Dallas; children from his previous marriage, Ken Toler of Greenville, TX and Debra Newby of Paris, TX; 5 grandchildren, Wes Hawkins, Mark White, Bobby White, Justin Toler and Ashley Toler; 8 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Hoppy and Marvin Toler and his son, Steve “Hoss” Toler.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Amarillo Veteran's Hospital: 6010 W Amarillo Blvd, Amarillo, TX 79106.
